Engineers and planners use growth and energy usage projections, as well as continuous monitoring of the electric system, to identify the need for improvements to the system that serves our customers in Buncombe County. Since it can take several years to plan, develop, engineer and construct a project, we begin the process in advance to ensure the new facilities are in place and ready to meet customers’ energy needs.

Construction crews generally work weekdays during daylight hours and carry identification showing their affiliation with Duke Energy. The crews use a variety of vehicles and equipment to place and erect poles and to string wires. Following construction, the area will be restored as closely as possible to its original condition.

Our goal is to minimize impacts to homes and businesses as well as environmental and cultural resources. Close to construction of the line, which is expected to begin in spring 2022, vegetation clearing and tree removal will be conducted to ensure safe and unobstructed access for the construction, operation and maintenance of the substation and transmission line.
