Our goal at Duke Energy is to provide affordable and dependable electricity every day to southwest Ohio’s homes, schools, businesses and hospitals. As part of our continuous evaluation of the electric system, we’ve identified a need to replace an existing 138-kilovolt (kV) H-frame structure located in the historic Spring Grove Cemetery in Hamilton County.
This equipment located between two 138-kV transmission towers supports clearance requirements for the transmission line, which has two independent electric transport systems (circuits) made up of three sets of wires. The project is the result of our recent inspections to ensure the continued reliability of the electric system. The H-frame replacement will involve constructing a new structure that also addresses modern reliability standards.
The existing wooden two-pole H-frame structure will be replaced with a single steel pole structure to support strength and reliability. The new structure is 85 feet in height and will have 12.5 feet embedded into the ground. As a result, the new steel pole will be 72.5 feet above ground – about 3 feet taller than the present H-frame equipment.
Duke Energy Ohio is proposing vegetation clearing for this project to begin in late May 2021. Construction is planned for June 2021 with restoration of the disturbed area through summer.
A notice to construct, operate and maintain this electric transmission line project is now pending before the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) in Columbus, Ohio. View the copy of the notice.
